Eskom, in addressing some of the electricity challenges spoke about cable theft and “izinyoka”/ illegal connection. Eskom explained how illegal connections affect how everyone else gets access to electricity. If the electricity is supposed to service 100 households and through illegal connections it now ends up servicing 200 people it will keep tripping and blow up, so she encouraged that people do the right thing. The community was encouraged to ensure that they have legal connections and safeguard their infrastructure.
Eskom encouraged people to change the registration of Meters. When the person how was registered passes away, those left behind should register themselves because you cannot benefit off someone who is not alive. There is no charge for that- all that’s needed is an Affidavit confirming that your family agrees to you being the one to use the meter.
The community was also encouraged to register for Free Basic Services through the indigent registration in order to get 50 Kilowats monthly. Eskom is only able to give this 50 Kilowat if you appear on the municipalities Indigent register, and this is on my done by the local municiplity. (GKM has a Free Basic Services Unit located at the Qumrha Office)
