Easter Arrive Alive Campaign launch


Today The Honourable Mayor of Great Kei LM, Cllr NW Tekile attended the launch of the Easter Arrive Alive Campaign launch by the EC Department of Transport. Led by The Honourable MEC Nqata, the campaign seeks to raise awareness on safety on the roads.

Hon Mayor Cllr NW Tekile welcomed the guests and expressed great joy on this initiative. He also took time to relay the projects by SANRAL which are currently underway in the municipality, touching on some of the challenges. He Further requested the intervention of the Dept of Transport in some of the challenges that were currently being experienced with current projects taking place. “We appreciate this initiative as it helps all road users by ensuring that they’re safe on our roads, we know that this is a very busy time on our roads so we appreciate the visibility of law enforcement officers”

Head of Department, Mrs Madumane announced that the Eastern Cape had reduced road fatalities by 21% in the last Festive season “We can still do better and as we go to Easter let’s do better. Let’s be responsible so we save more lives on the road”

The Hon MEC Nqata reiterated the importance of following the rules of the road, stating that the signage’s on the roads were there for a purpose and people should follow these. “During this period last year, 40 deaths had already been registered on our roads – it was the first time since 2018 that we had recorded such a high number, ubomi babantu bubalulekile asikwazi nobeka ixabiso kubo, ngoko ke masisebenzisane ukuqinesekisa uba sifika siphila”

Also Present at the launch was the Executive Mayor of Amathole DM, Hon Cllr A Ntsangani and Eastern Cape Liquor Board CEO Dr N Makala.
